WHEREFORE THE DIFFERENCE

WHEREFORE THE DIFFERENCE

I have lived two lives,
in two different countries,
in two different cultures,
in two different centuries.

I was an invisible man in a prior life
until I embraced Islam;
until I married an Asian lady;
until I lived and traveled abroad.
It was then the sun shone through the clouds and my enigma disappeared.

My manifest destiny was
a bit of Highway 61,
a bit of Route 66,
a bit of the road less traveled.
Without map
and GPS to guide me
I trod through the looking glass darkly
and rode into the land of Oz.
Although I was the captain of my soul, the Admiral charted my course.

In my long journey
I discovered that differences
were not always popular,
nor accepted by everyone,
by every culture,
by every country.

And yet, in our world
roses and thorns coexist,
sunshine and rain is needed for them to grow.
So it must be for us;
we must, in spite of our diversity,
scatter the seeds of love and hope,
and believe that we too can
break through all the dirt --
the hate, the greed, the humbug.
